ABSTRACT:
Faba beans are considered one of the major legume crops for its benefits such as a source of protein in human nutrition, animal feeding, poultry and crop manure. Lately, the amount of introduced faba bean to the KSA has increased, and economic value is around SR 60,000,000 as avegetable, either canned or as dry beans.
Furthermore, it plays also a key role in the biological nitrogen fixation process and structure of ecosystem. At the same time, it’s been involved in crop rotation with other cereals in order to improve soil conditions.
Few molecular tools are available for the Faba bean. In order to develop a sustainable advanced breeding and gene discovery program for the Faba bean the development of a wide range of molecular tools is a priority.
The utilization of molecular tools significantly impacts the development of superior agronomic lines, and identification of genes / genotypes of interest. In agriculture the main sources of genetic diversity is germplasm collections. We have collected Faba bean germplasms from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Yemen, Pakistan, Sudan and from ICARDA. Currently we are engaging in a long term breeding program for Faba bean. We are in the process of evaluating those germoplasms performance in the field under different abioted stresses and developing molecular tools such as (AFLP, RAPD,SCAR and SSR) to assess their diversity at the molecular level and to be integrated in our marker assisted breeding
Therefore, the genetic variability of collected Faba bean need to be assisted and investigated based on field performance and molecular markers of DNA for breeding program purpose.
OBJECTIVES:
- Determine the genetic variation among and with in collected faba bean germplasm.
- Identification of promising genotypes with level of water tolerance for the characters considered important in breeding of faba bean and assess the field performance of faba bean genotypes in terms of yield, yield components, quality value and water use efficiency.
- Development of genetic tools for genetic diversity, marker assisted breeding and gene identification in Faba bean.
- Establishment of national faba bean gene bank and call for collaboration operation with same interest institutes.
